Riding through the Keys
It was 120 miles of amazing!
I really liked the people I talked to and the sights I saw. I couldn't help stopping to take photos every few minutes! The water was stunning, the animals were strange, and the drivers were amiable. Bike lanes are wide and the traffic is laid back. It's Jimmy Buffet, Ernest Hemmingway, Live Bait, charter boat tours, Tiki Bars and beach life. We camped and slept in the van.
Also had our worst night in the van so far - a KMart parking lot in the town of Marathon, that turned out to be the rallying point for the taxis serving the airport. Taxi drivers at the Marathon KMart are a partying crowd. It sounded like they settle domestic disputes while waiting for calls.

I stopped at a Cuban bakery one morning, that was very busy. There were five servers madly making coffee and heating pastries, at least 10 customers in line with families, people on their way to work, the tables were full. Everyone was speaking Spanish and every sign in the place was in Spanish.
So, I waited in line and rehearsed in my head how I was going to order una pasterie y café con leche.
I was straining to hear the questions that the server would ask the other customers so I'd be SO ready. I got to the front of the line and the young lady said, "Good morning! What can I get for you?" without even a hint of accent.
Huh. The coffee and pastry were delicious anyway.

It was only 2 1/2 days of riding altogether....
